Andy COuncil - The Phoenix of Belfast
Client - Cathedral Quarter Trust/Belfast City Council

This was part of a series of works completed in North Street in 2014. We heard a news report that North Street was to be tidied up, that the ‘graffiti’ was to be removed and replaced with fake shop fronts. We hate fake shop fronts.

So we called up the people in charge and suggested that Street Art would be a much more appropriate way to deal with the problem. We were amazed that they completely agreed. Fair play.

This particular piece is made up of many important buildings in Belfast and the imagery of the Phoenix is meant to represent this idea that North Street will one day rise from the flames of suspicious fires and once again be a vibrant street at the heart of Belfast.

In 2016 a small piece of the facade came loose and fell onto the footpath and the current owners then took it upon themselves to remove the rest of the facade for ‘health and safety’ reasons. Although the mural is in pretty bad shape large portions of the mural are still visible and it’s an important and popular piece.
