norman Clan — Linenopolis
Client - Eastside Partnership

This piece was commissioned by Eastside Partnership with funding from Urban Villages.

The pocket park on Tower Street was developed in 2011 to replace a derelict site, and included some heritage signage which related to the local linen industry.

Responding to this brief Noman Clan chose to depict a modern woman who resembles a flax gatherer, encircled by a whirl of light and flax flowers which symbolise the energy and life the flax industry sustained. There is a surreal dream-like environment around the figure, which relates to a folktale which tells how flax was introduced by other worldly beings who dwelt on the Shahbna mountain.
